Five Interesting Facts About Clockenflap

Indie Manila is going to Hong Kong this year to cover Clockenflap and we want you to be a part of our journey! For starters, let us share with you 5 interesting tidbits about one of the most attended events in Hong Kong.

FACT 1: The first Clockenflap Music and Arts Festival was held in a concrete public space called ‘Cyberport’ in January 12, 2008 with just 1,500 attendees. The brainchild of  Jay Foster, Mike Hill, and Justin Sweeting, the main goal of the festival is to nurture Hong Kong’s arts, music, and film scene. The festival only had Hong Kong musicians like Ray Dollars,  Clementine Is My Sunshine, and Ni.Ne.Mo. to name a few and The Young Knives from the UK.

FACT 2: The festival was extended into a 3-day event in 2013 with 30,000 attendees and 7 music stages. The festival became a massive success that it went from a one-day to a three-day spectacle for Hong Kong locals and tourist from around the world to enjoy. Franz Ferdinand, Metric, Tegan and Sara, and Two Door Cinema Club are few of the big names that headlined the show.

FACT 3: Clockenflap is celebrating its 10th year this November. Yup! Clockenflap is now a kid who’s ready to spread its wings to welcome more adventures and innovations to embrace. And the people behind the massive event are doing just that by introducing more activities and showcases music and arts fans can enjoy! FACT 4: Radioactive Sago Project  was the first Filipino act to grace the Clockenflap stage in 2009. According to this writeup by Time Out Hong Kong, Lourd De Veyra and the rest of his band Radioactive Sago Project played on the 2nd Clockenflap Music and Arts Festival in 2009.

Rock legends Sandwich, led by former Eraserheads drummer Rayms Marasigan also performed in 2012.

Diego Mapa (Pedicab, Eggboy) and Jay Gapasin (Radioactive Sago Project, Kapitan Kulam), collectively known as Tarsius and June Marieezy (Good Morning High Fives) followed and were part of Clockenflap back in 2014.

Mr. Malasimbo represented the PH and played a glorious set on Clockenflap Sunday of 2016.

FACT 5: Cheats and Pedicab will play Clockenflap this November. Clockenflap opened a slot for two Filipino bands to showcase their repertoire this year! Our homegrown talents will share the stage with legendary acts like The Prodigy, Massive Attack, Feist, The Dandy Warhols, and Mac De Marco to name a few.
