Karina Baluyut is among the original members of the Guevarra Group of Artists from the
time of its inception, and one of the first to have exhibited their works at Galerie Joaquin.
A graduate of Architecture from the University of the Philippines, and subsequently a topnotcher
in the 2004 Architectural Board exams, she had previously worked as a set designer in a number
of theatrical productions. She took up informal art lessons and joined on-the-spot sketching
sessions to hone her skills.
Given her formal training as an architect, Baluyut has incorporated the tenets of the discipline in her work as a painter in the abstract expressionist genre. Baluyut’s works are highly distinctive for their sparing but eloquent evocations of key architectural concepts and principles. These abstractions often conjure themes of reflection and contemplation. Her influences are Mark Rothko, Paul Klee and other progenitors of the Color Field painting.
Baluyut is a veteran of countless group shows, mostly at the Galerie Joaquin, where her abstract works are among the favorites of collectors. Her one-woman show titled "Fields of Gold" proved her success in her chosen field and marked her as one of the more in demand abstractionists of her generation.

Melancholia is a Philippine independent film directed, written, and edited by Lav Diaz. It examines the issues of crime, religion, and prostitution, as well as grief. A black and white digital film, it has a running time of approximately 7 and a half hours. It was shown as the closing film in the Orizzonti (New Horizons) segment of the Venice International Film Festival where it won Best Film, making it Lav Diaz’s second Orizzonti winner after Kagadanan Sa Banwaan Ning Mga Engkanto (Death in the Land of Engkantos), which won the Golden Lion Special Mention award in the previous year. It is produced by Sine Olivia.
Melancholia is divided into 3 narrative chapters. The first chapter, which has a linear narrative structure, takes place in the north of the Philippines. While traveling, a sex worker passes through a village where she meets a pimp and a nun. Through the course of the film, the different characters change roles to divert themselves from their grief over rebel friends who have been eliminated in a catastrophic event. Given their great differences, through this exercise their identities become confused. Later on, the film dispenses with narration and is simply dominated by music and various seemingly disconnected images. Melancholia finally ends with a sequence showing the last days of three men in the rainforest at night, while a poetic voiceover recites the musings of a rebel.
